Rain and Steam Railways XX

October 8th, 2007

railwaymen 1 2

What a strange summer its been! There aren’t many years when we are making mostly boots all summer long, luckily a lovely pair of long boots with a summer dress is a great look and alot of folks felt their new shoes were the perfect antidote to grey skies!
The photoshoot at Buckfastleigh Steam Railway was such fun! The guys were really helpful and didn’t mind us prancing around on the platform, taking photos and wandering around their machine yards. Its a tremendous place! They take such care of the station and engines, and the people who work there are really skilled - it was so interesting to see a workshop thats on a very different scale to our own, with the massive trains being stripped down and rebuilt in a huge shed crammed with tools. We would highly recommend a visit and a journey by steam- some of our customers a few weeks ago came all the way from Plymouth to Totnes by train, then Totnes to Buckfastleigh by steam train, then walked to our workshop from the station! Apart from those who walk or cycle to see us, I think that’s one of the most environmentally friendly visits we have had if avoiding car travel….

Slouchy Eco Tan Shoulder Bag Bark 1

In between us all taking our annual leave here and there, making lots of shoes and having planning meetings (thinking of re-organising the workshop layout to give us more stock space and shift the office around a bit so its cosier this autumn and winter!) we have been working on some more new designs following the launch of the Eco-Tan Accessories and footwear.
We have had some great feedback about the new bags on the website, and have turned our attention to some new belts and boots that we have been mulling over for a while. We are just doing our first test pieces - its a pretty long process, so presently we are at the ‘like that lots but will it stay on your foot?’ stage!- where things get translated from sketches and reworked pattern pieces into basic forms we can try on and play around with.

A busy month! XX

July 10th, 2007

Time has flown by this month and we have been very busy! There’s been a buzz of excitement around the workshop getting the new Eco-Tan Accessories range together, and we did a really fun photoshoot this week (once the black clouds and torrential rain finally lifted!) so are looking forwards to putting the new pictures on the site.
We were delighted to see a picture of Dr Alice Roberts, an inspiring scientist and presenter of ‘Don’t Die Young’ on BBC2, looking fantastic in a pair of Iris Knee-high boots in the Independent. We all read the article at coffee time, and we were struck by her passion for re-energising a traditional way of explaining and exploring science in a way that people can relate to.
We feel similarly about making things - shoes or anything else - in that it shouldn’t be a distant and separate component of peoples lives, but relevant, integrated, and lively. Where something comes from and how it is made is important to us, and hope that we can show this through what we do!
Green Shoes founder Alison Hastie has recently been elected a fellow of the RSA(Royal Society for the enouragement of Arts, Manufacturing and Commerce), and we feel it is wonderful that her incredible commitment to working in a creative and visionary way over the last 25 years has been recognised.
When Alison started Green Shoes, the importance of carrying traditional skill forwards in a way that values the individual maker within design and manufacturing was against the tide of mass production and factory dominance. Our current awareness of the social and environmental impact of this comes out of the continued commitment of people who have placed these ideals at the centre of their lives and communicated it to others.

Welcome to the news pages! XX

May 31st, 2007

Hello and welcome to our news pages! Here we will be able to share what’s going on at the workshop, ideas we are working on, news of sales or special offers and much more!
This year has seen some really exciting developments at Green Shoes, starting in January with the move to Dart Mills after being based in Totnes. Our new workshop by the River Dart feels really homely - after a chilly start (before the heating was up and running!) when we were wearing layers of jumpers topped with our shoemaker’s aprons, we are now really settled in and enjoying this lovely sunny space.
Since moving, we have been working on some new accessory designs in Eco-tan leather. We love this leather! It is inspiring to work with such a gorgeous new material, that not only feels and looks wonderful but that is organically tanned with sustainable pure plant extracts. We are really happy with the samples of the new bags that are coming out of all the discussions and test runs (yes, we are very lucky and get to wear our prototypes out and about, we have to make sure they look great and work well in coping with the jumble of things we cram into them!). We have settled on 4 new bag designs, including one for men, and a couple of belts, all available online in July.
Another addition to the site is the Archive Sale page, where we will now be able to offer sale items online. It will be updated throughout the year so it’s really worth checking in every now and again as there may be the perfect pair of shoes just waiting for you!
